Anchor load tests, or pull-out tests, are a key method in photovoltaic installations, especially in the construction of ground-mounted solar power plants. These tests focus on verifying the stability and load-bearing capacity of panel anchoring in the field, which is essential to ensure resistance to wind, snow loads, and other natural elements.

Use of anchor load tests in practice

The main purpose of pull-out tests is to ensure that the anchoring system is strong enough to support the structure for the solar panels. The results of the tests allow us to evaluate whether the anchoring system is suitable for installation and whether it provides the necessary stability against pull-out under maximum load.

In September 2024, we conducted stress tests in Creutzwald, France, to verify the effectiveness of the anchoring systems from TreeSystem. Here we tested its resistance to wind and snow, which is crucial for the safety and long-term durability of the solar power plant.

Progress of the anchor load tests

The following steps should not be missed when testing anchors. The anchors are driven into the ground with the help of the technique. A device is then attached to the anchor point to record the maximum tensile force before the anchor is pulled out. During the test, a continuous tensile load is applied until the anchor slips out of the ground. The maximum value recorded indicates the degree of resistance of the anchor to pull-out.

Each test point is carefully documented, including GPS coordinates, length of pins used, and the load achieved. This data is then analysed to evaluate the overall effectiveness of the anchor system.

Results and evaluation of anchor load tests

In our project, a total of 25 tests were carried out, and anchors with lengths of 790 mm, 990 mm, and 1190 mm were tested. Different maximum load values were achieved during the pull-out tests, allowing Greenbuddies engineers to compare the performance of anchors of different lengths in different field conditions. For example, anchor lengths of 1190 mm recorded values of up to 2322 kg, indicating high resistance to pull-out, while shorter pins achieved lower values. However, this may be sufficient in some cases, depending on the conditions.

Conclusion of the anchor load tests

Pull-out tests are essential to ensure the long-term stability and safety of PV installations. The results ensure that the anchoring systems used for solar panels can withstand local conditions and environmental challenges. This type of testing enables optimization of structural designs and reduces the risk of damage to installations due to adverse weather or other natural phenomena, which is crucial for the efficient operation and long-term durability of PV plants.
